Itinerary

Schedule for the day

9:30 AM

Tokyo National Museum (Ueno Park)

A 10-minute walk from the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station. Allow 90 minutes for the highlights route on the 2nd floor of the Honkan building. Admission $7; closed Mondays.

11:30 AM

Ueno Zoo

A 5-minute walk through the park. Opened in 1882, Japan's oldest zoo, admission only $4. Its giant pandas were returned to China in January 2026, but gorillas, tigers, and other animals remain well worth the visit. Closed Mondays.

1:00 PM

Shinobazu Pond & Benten-do

3 minutes from the zoo's west garden. In summer, lotus leaves cover the entire pond and the vermilion temple reflects in the water — the best rest stop before the market.

1:30 PM

Ameyoko Market

A 5-minute walk; about 400 shops line the street under the JR tracks. Fishmongers and dried-goods sellers call out prices. Many stalls are cash only, so carry coins and small bills.

In case of emergency

Police: 110 · Ambulance/Fire: 119 · English-language help: JNTO Japan Visitor Hotline, 050-3816-2787 (24/7, multilingual). Don't hesitate to call if you need help.

Travel tips

Tipping isn't customary in Japan — no need to add extra at checkout. Cashless payment is widely accepted, though smaller shops, shrines, and temples are sometimes cash-only. Tax-free shopping (with your passport) is available at participating stores.
