Tokyo's neighborhood of obsessions

Shimokitazawa Vintage & Theater Half-Day Pamphlet

One minute from the station, you are in alleys lined with vintage shop signs, surrounded by the scrape of hangers on racks and the smell of old leather. Pass tiny theaters and live houses, then rest at a cafe built on former railway tracks. Four minutes by train from Shibuya, a different youth culture entirely.

Itinerary

Schedule for the day

Overview map showing how the stops relate to each other (straight lines only). For real walking directions, use the "directions" button on each step.

12:00 PM

Station-front Vintage Streets

Reach Shimokitazawa on the Odakyu Line or Keio Inokashira Line. Most vintage shops open at noon, so arriving earlier means closed shutters. Leave by the South Exit and follow the shopping-street signs.

12:30 PM

Vintage Shop Crawl

Over 100 secondhand shops sit within 300 m of the station, each with a specialty: military surplus, vintage denim, sell-by-weight racks. Always ask staff before trying anything on.

2:30 PM

Honda Gekijo & Theater District

3 minutes from the station. Honda Gekijo opened in 1982 and remains the heart of Japan's small-theater scene. Hand-drawn gig posters on nearby live-house doors tell you what the neighborhood is listening to.

3:30 PM

BONUS TRACK (shops on the old rail line)

A 5-minute walk. When the Odakyu Line went underground, this small strip of shops opened on the old tracks in 2020: sake, an independent bookshop, coffee stands. Rest on a bench in the courtyard.

In case of emergency

Police: 110 · Ambulance/Fire: 119 · English-language help: JNTO Japan Visitor Hotline, 050-3816-2787 (24/7, multilingual). Don't hesitate to call if you need help.

Travel tips

Tipping isn't customary in Japan — no need to add extra at checkout. Cashless payment is widely accepted, though smaller shops, shrines, and temples are sometimes cash-only. Tax-free shopping (with your passport) is available at participating stores.
