Itinerary

Schedule for the day

Overview map showing how the stops relate to each other (straight lines only). For real walking directions, use the "directions" button on each step.

10:00 AM

Shibuya Scramble Crossing (Hachiko Exit)

Up to 3,000 people cross each time the light changes; walk it once before you photograph it. For a free overhead view, use the station walkway windows above the Hachiko gate; SHIBUYA SKY (from $17, book ahead) is the paid option.

10:45 AM

Takeshita Street

One stop on the JR Yamanote Line from Shibuya. The street becomes shoulder-to-shoulder after noon, so go early. A cream-filled crepe from Marion Crepes runs $4-6; step aside to actually eat it.

11:45 AM

Meiji Jingu Shrine

Pass under the great torii and the traffic noise simply stops, replaced by the crunch of gravel. Entry is free; the Inner Garden ($3.50) is worth it in June for the irises.

1:00 PM

Omotesando & Omotesando Hills

From Jingu Bridge, walk 1 km down the zelkova-lined avenue. For lunch, restaurants one block back on Cat Street have shorter waits than those on the avenue.

In case of emergency

Police: 110 · Ambulance/Fire: 119 · English-language help: JNTO Japan Visitor Hotline, 050-3816-2787 (24/7, multilingual). Don't hesitate to call if you need help.

Travel tips

Tipping isn't customary in Japan — no need to add extra at checkout. Cashless payment is widely accepted, though smaller shops, shrines, and temples are sometimes cash-only. Tax-free shopping (with your passport) is available at participating stores.
